With former National Rifle Association President Marion Hammer at his side, Florida Republican Gov. Jeb Bush signed SB-436, a bill on Apr. 26 intended to make it clear that people have a right to defend themselves on the street, meeting force with force without fear of being prosecuted, according to Associated Press.
Also called the Castle Doctrine bill, the measure, which passed the legislature overwhelmingly earlier this year, says people who are under attack dont have to retreat before responding, as long as theyre in a place they legally have a right to be.
The bill, which takes effect Oct. 1, says a person has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so, to prevent death or great bodily harm to him or herself or another.
