Supremes Allow CA Gun Show Ban to Stand

The US Supreme Court has let stand a lower federal court ruling that California governments can ban gun shows on government property.

The high court declined to review a challenge of an ordinance passed in Alameda County that had banned gun shows on county fairgrounds.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals had allowed the ban to stand, holding that the Alameda County ordinance was legal because gunowners do not have a First Amendment or Second Amendment right to have firearms for sale on county property, according to Associated Press.

The original lawsuit had been filed by TS Trade Shows. The ordinance was passed in Alameda County following a shooting at the fairgrounds, located near the city of San Francisco. It not only banned the fairground gun shows, it also made it illegal to have firearms outside government offices and county courthouses.

The ordinance did not ban gun shows on private property, only on county-owned lands.
