CRPA Challenges San Francisco Gun Ordinance

The city of San Francisco is being sued by the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), which claims that the city’s “assault weapon” ordinance is unconstitutional and is preempted by California’s “assault weapon” law.

CRPA is joined in the lawsuit by the California Sporting Goods Association and several San Francisco residents. According to CRPA spokesperson Chuck Michel, an attorney in the case, the plaintiffs gave the city “every opportunity to repeal this law without litigation.”

Six other cities faced with the lawsuit have repealed similar ordinances under pressure from CRPA and the National Rifle Association, but San Francisco stood pat. CRPA contends the ordinance has been superceded by state law.
